Two wines. One meal. One epic battle. Who will win?
In this corner, we have Avery Quinn Zinfandel from North Coast, California. An affordable Zin, costing only about $10. Dried cranberries, dried cherry, and dried raspberry fill the nose, making the wine appear to be sweet and fruity. However, the palate has an oaky flavor, consisting of bitter baking chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, and freshly cracked pepper. This Zinfandel feels like a velvet red carpet as it goes down your throat.
In this corner, we have Roots Run Deep, Educated Guess Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California. A tad more expensive at $20 a bottle, this bottle is much more savory/spicy than fruity. With initial notes of blackberry, cherry, and leather, the oaky tannins produce much more of a spice box taste and vanilla finish. Parsley can be detected during the lingering finish. A fine, Napa cab, indeed!
Tonight’s battle is that of a Greek Feta-Zucchini Turkey Burger from Skinnytaste. Shredded red onion, shredded zucchini, breadcrumbs, spices, feta, and ground turkey are mixed together into a ball to create a moist, flavorful burger. After grilling it on medium-high heat, the burgers are placed upon a chopped greek salad with red wine vinegar. It is ready for its wine pairing. Which wine proved to be the better companion? The winner, of the battle between Educated Guess Cabernet Sauvignon vs. Avery Quinn Zinfandel is…
Avery Quinn Zinfandel!!! Educated Guess, while amazing on its own, didn’t wow me with this meal. None of the fruity flavors appeared, perhaps being overtaken by the red onion and vinegar. The spicy notes came through, but it made the pairing very one dimensional.
3 grapes .
Not so with the Avery Quinn Zin. All of those gorgeous, dried fruity notes were heightened by the savory mediterranean flavors of the meal. The meal was already very savory and earthy, with turkey, garlic, oregano, and red onion. The pairing was not one-dimensional, like the cabernet, but had so many layers of flavor!
