Sambuca is an Italian anise flavored liqueur. Anise is similar (though very different) from licorice. Flavored with star anise, this drink is usually clear and has a thicker texture. It is often served after dinner, as the anise flavors are a perfect to cleanse the palate after a meal. Often served with coffee or neat, I decided to use the Sambuca to soak Pistachios and put on top of ice cream.
After soaking the pistachios in the Sambuca for 12-13 hours, I drained everything and put it in the fridge. After soaking, the nuts were rather soft. The cold air helped to make them somewhat crunchy again. I did this for about 20 minutes. I then topped them off with a tiny pinch of kosher salt and mixed them in.
The pistachio, anise flavor was incredible. The liqueur wasn’t too overpowering, which I feared would happen. The salt gave the flavor just the right amount of acidity to balance the sweetness. Like I said…a tiny pinch will do!
Once the pistachios were fully chilled, I put them on top of vanilla ice cream. Holy crap, this dessert was absolutely delicious! The pistachio, anise flavor was incredible. Vanilla was the perfect base to enhance the nut topping. Next time, I think I will try Pistachio or Coffee ice cream! 5 grapes
Liqueur: Basilica Sambuca (ABC Store: $13. I know nothing about Sambuca so I went with the cheapest bottle possible!)
